Glencullen Adventure Park: A destination for everyone
We are often tempted to look further afield for adventure and a change of scenery; but sometimes we only need to look on our doorstep! Glencullen Adventure Park (locally known as The GAP) is one of those places. Nestled in the Dublin Mountains, you get that feeling that you're miles away, but really you're only a short drive from Dundrum.
Established in 2017, The GAP is first and foremost a mountain bike park, with over 30 trails and the only uplift service in the Republic of Ireland. It's also a well-loved community hub, with walkers, foodies, hikers and wellness enthusiasts visiting on a daily basis. The GAP has become somewhat of a second office for me and Cat, as we love calling in to say hello to whoever might be around! We host our small business coffee mornings at The GAP café, Grizzly's and the beautiful surroundings of the park provide the perfect location for some nature connection.
Heat, Hills and Horizons : Tigh'N Alluis
With breath-taking views, rustic saunas and a warm welcome, Tigh'N Alluis is not only a wellness spot, but there's something spiritual about it too. Overlooking the Dublin Mountains and with a great view of the Sugarloaf, you feel miles away from the chaos but part of something bigger. As you meander about your wellness session, pottering in and out of the sauna, the lake, the plunge pools and showers, nature settles in around you and welcomes you back. You're always greeted with a smile and open arms as you arrive and immediately feel relaxed and ready to chill. I love a visit to Tigh'N Alluis, especially in the colder months where I can appreciate the warmth of the sauna so much more!
Fuel For Your Adventure: Grizzly's @ The Gap
Grizzly's at the GAP is a hub of our local community. Whether you're just dropping off for a quick takeaway coffee (here's a cheeky reminder to bring your own carry-cup!) or sitting down for a nourishing and comforting meal, Grizzly's has it all. A warm fire and cosy surroundings welcome you as you step in the door. Nothing like it on a cold day! If the weather is decent or you're feeling brave, you can always take a seat outside and connect with nature as you sip your coffee. It's a busy place with lots of energy moving through it, with bustling bikers and food fanatics, so it's a great spot to watch the world go by. My personal favourite are the hot dogs, they bring back great memories of attending football matches in Maine Road as a child, but Grizzly's do it so much better!
Into the Wild and Into our Past: Wonderful Walks
The walking trails around The GAP are a perfect way to while away some time, whether you're up for a big hike or a short, leisurely stroll. One of my favourite spots to walk to is The Giant's Grave, also known as the Ballyedmonduff Wedge Tomb. This tomb is around 4,000 years old and has stood the test of time. The view across the mountains from here of the Sugarloaf makes it clear to us why our ancestors chose this place to build a monument to their dead. It truly is a privilege to pause here awhile and take in the surrounding views and connect with nature, as well as feeling the presence of our ancestors.

Little Feet, Big Adventures: Forest Kids
Forest Kids is a small local business that helps kids connect back to nature, encourages free play and teaches them survival skills. It's a great way for children to escape the busyness of everyday life and get back to what's important. The Forest Kids camps have an amazing balance between a fun-filled, packed schedule and freedom for the children to choose what they like to do. My two girls love going on these camps in the school holidays. They come back rosy-cheeked, tired and excited, with tales of smores, hammocks and sandcastles! The leaders of Forest Kids are extremely helpful, kind and caring towards the kids and parents and I love the sense of adventure they help the children to foster.
Where History Meets the Hills: Newtown Hill
Newtown Hill Archaelogical Tours is one of the newest hidden gems in the Glencullen area. Run by a father-and-son team, Phillip and Daniel, this experience offers a real insight into an amazing array of historical sites on their farm.
Travel back in time, soak up the ancestral presence and if you're feeling brave, venture into a fairy fort! Phillip and Daniel are on good terms with the Good People, so you're safe!
As well as archaeological tours, Newtown Hill also offer sheep dog demonstrations, where you can experience the hard work and diligence of the farm's sheepdogs. A truly memorable day out.
The Heart of the Hills: Johnnie Fox's
Johnnie Fox's Pub is a local gem woven into the fabric of Glencullen. Situated just a short distance from the GAP and Newtown Hill, Johnnie Fox's offers the ideal setting to soak up the atmosphere of the Dublin Mountains. Established in 1798, Johnnie Fox's is the highest pub in Ireland and oozes personality and whimsy. You could spend all day pottering around and acquainting yourself with the pub's fascinating memorabilia. With the most flavoursome food and drink, a warm welcome and a music session or two, you can relax and unwind after a busy day in Glencullen. My personal recommendation is the lamb shank... you can't beat it! And obviously they pull a great pint of Guinness.
